La philosophie d’Emmanuel Levinas a emporté une repensée foncière de l’être, de ses catégories et de son rang. C’est une conception inédite et inouïe de la subjectivité qui en est l’enjeu, en tant qu’elle se structure comme ayant à répondre d’une responsabilité éthique irréductible à ce qu’avaient déterminé les philosophies morales et politiques sous ce vocable. Le colloque voudrait évoquer les « questions » qui viennent après la « réponse » : la nature et le statut de l’éthique selon Levinas, les modalités de son articulation avec la Justice et les requêtes du Tiers, l’exercice même de la philosophie, sa pratique et son écriture, après le dé-dire lévinassien. Il se demandera à quel avenir peut bien être promise une pensée si radicale et si audacieuse, d’un siècle à l’autre.

On occasion of Emmanuel Levinas’ 100th anniversary (1906-1995), the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg intends to honour and to commemorate its famous former scholar. Between 1928 and 1929, Levinas studied philosophy in Freiburg, where he was fascinated and strongly formed by Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology and Martin Heidegger’s ontology. Later, after moving to France, Levinas did not renounce at a permanent confrontation with the so-called « Freiburger Philosophy » and for this reason we owe to him the first essays ever appeared in France on Edmund Husserl (« The theory of intuition in Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology », 1930) and on Martin Heidegger (« Martin Heidegger et l’ontologie », in: « Revue philosophique de France et de l’étranger », May/June 1932, pp. 395-431). In the Fifties, Levinas’ gradual dissociation from Heidegger’s philosophy (and in particular from his ontological difference) was due to the encountering with the French existentialist thought, whereas Husserl’s phenomenology remained a permanent reference point for Levinas’ methodology. In his later and most important works written in the Seventies, Levinas postulated a radical change in the meaning of Being: the primacy of ethics on ontology, i.e. « the ethics as first philosophy ». Such an inversion of the occidental thinking, whose speculations traditionally begin by investigating the Being, implied a new conception of subjectivity: for Levinas, the subjectivity does not emerge from the self-conscious identity of the epistemological I, but rather from the ›rupture of the Self‹ (rupture du soi) caused by the alterity of the Other. The Self is determined by its responsibility towards the Other up to a radical consequence: in its ontological structure, the Self shows itself as ›hostage of the Other‹.
Hence, starting from Levinas’ conception of ethics, we face a wide spectrum of many-sided questions related to the freedom of the Self, to the limitation of its acting as well as to the experience of transcendence by encountering the face of the Other.
